Trellis Training Fig Production

Project Objective
The main goal of this project is to increase productivity and yield in fig orchards. By using the trellis training method and other innovative techniques, the project aims to produce more fruit in a shorter time compared to traditional fig orchards, offering a more efficient agricultural approach.

Benefits

  • The trellis training method allows up to 10 times more yield per unit area, significantly increasing productivity.
  • Pruning and guiding the plants enable easier and more organized maintenance, saving farmers time and effort.
  • Encouraging plants to produce shoots towards sunlight increases photosynthesis capacity, resulting in healthier and higher-quality fruits.
  • The lateral growth of trees with new methods optimizes space usage and increases total production.
  • Harvesting with the trellis system occurs earlier than with traditional methods, providing economic advantages and increasing farmers’ income.

Implemented Work

  • The model, developed by Aydın Fig Research Institute, was first tested at the institute’s orchard and then implemented in the Smart Village project.
  • 1,014 trees were planted on a 6-decare area.
  • The performance of the Smart Village model in the field was monitored regularly, optimized, and adjusted as needed.
  • Results were shared with other agricultural experts and producers to disseminate knowledge.

Results

  • Successful Agricultural Entrepreneur: The experience of Izmir-based farmer Mehmet Turgut with the Trellis Training System:
“I went to Aydın and saw it on-site. Then I implemented it here. We have now started harvesting. This production was risky. We thought, ‘What if it doesn’t work?’ We took the risk, but the result is perfect. People who see it are very surprised. I will also manage my orchard this way.”
